March 15, 2008 President, Pastoral Council St. Columba Parish Dear Brother Bob, 1. On March 3rd, just before our Council's regular business meeting, we gave the two checks (one from the K of C State Council and one from Walmart) for the persons with intellectual disabilities to Mrs. Claudia Gamble, Arc of Dothan-Houston County representative. The Dothan Eagle newspaper photographer took photographs for publication. One of the photos, with a caption, was sent to The Catholic Week and it was printed in the March 14th issue, on page 18. Mrs. Gamble expressed her gratitude to all of us and departed. As you are well aware of, the $150.00 check from Sony Corporation arrived too late to be included in the K of C State Council check; therefore, we deposited it in the Army Aviation Federal Credit Union K of C savings account and it will accrue interest, along with the $60.00 we received from one of our members who purchased the last two boxes of Toosie Rolls. The total of $210.00 will be used as "seed money" for the next financial support drive in the September/October timeframe. 2. This afternoon, we held our Annual State Basketball Free-Throw Tournament in the gym of Cathoilic High School in Montgomery. Boys and girls from K of C Councils throughout the State, ages 10 - 14, competed in their own age level and sex category, and the State Deputy and I gave trophies to the 1st, 2nd and 3rd place trophy winners. In addition, all the contestants received special "T" shirts with the K of C emblem and other information on them. Our Council had 6 contestants and 4 of them won either 1st or 2nd place. International champions will be determined on the basis of the best scores from all of the States and nations' competitions submitted in each age & sex categories. All State winners will receive a recognition certificate from the Supreme Council office in New Haven, CT. All International Champions will be notified by a personal letter of congratulations from Supreme Knight Carl A. Anderson and will receive an International Free-Throw Championship trophy commissioned by the Supreme Council and forwarded to the State Deputy for presentation to the appropriate boys and girls. 3. We hosted a Second Degree on Sunday, the 9th of March, at 2:00 PM, and conferred it to eight 1st Degree members of our Council and two from Enterprise, in honor of State Chaplain Reverend Father Leo Blanchet. After the ceremony was completed, we held a social party (sandwiches, chips and refreshments) for all attendees in upper room of the BAC building. 4. After all Masses during the weekend of the 8-9th of this month, we handed-out to all parishioners prayer cards in English for the upcoming first Apostolic Journey to the USA of His Holiness, Pope Benedict XVI, during 15-20 April. Supreme Knight, Carl A. Anderson, had sent a letter to all Grand Knights in which he asked us, among other things, to get permission from our Pastor to distribute the cards with a photograph of the Pope on one side and on the back, it has a special prayer for the success and protection during his trip. We were also asked to visit www.kofc.org and add our names to the Spiritual E-Bouquet of prayers for the papal visit. I received approval from Msgr. Gallagher to distribute the cards after the Masses and for putting the announcement in the Church bulletin to summarize what's on the letter which explains the reason for the card. We requested the same cards, but written in Spanish. We will distribute these after the Hispanic Mass, tomorrow. 5. We received a very nice Thank You card from Fr. Leo Blanchet to answer our Get-Well-Soon card we signed and sent him last month, after his back operation. 6. Yesterday, we held the second Fish-Fry of this Lenten season, from 5:00 to 7:30 PM, in O'Hara Hall. A K of C committee had been formed to take care of all the planning and execution of the project. The proceeds from this project also will be used to support charitable activities of the Council, such as our pledge to Catholic Charities, our Seminarian, Ryan Bravata, etc..... In fact, we already sent him a check and I wrote a letter of encouragement for his birthday February 22nd, a date which was provided to us by Reverend Father Alejandro Valladares, Director of Vocations for the Archdiocese of Mobile. 7. On Saturday, February 23rd, I accompanied three of our Council members who received the honors of the Fourth Degree of our Order at Our Lady of the Valley Catholic Church in Pelham (just south of Birmingham). After the ceremony, we attended Mass which was followed by a banquet with our families, later that evening. 8. Some of our Council members are supporting the call from Msgr. Gallagher to help parishioners park their vehicles properly just before and during the 10:00 AM Masses on Sundays. We have found that there is a number of parishioners that come late to that Mass and then try to park in unauthorized areas such as the wide area for facilitating the exit of emergency vehicles of the new parking lot. In addition, some people park their vehicles in such a way that they use more than one parking place. We have been asking them to move their vehicles to another location, and they have done so. We have seen cars coming into the Church's parking lot as late as 10:25 AM and people get out and go into Church. Some vehicles have been driven into the parking lot through the exit-only drives, both on the east and west sides of the Chapel. After they get across the Main Street median, it would be dangerous to tell them to back-up into the street and not come in to the parking lot that way. In a few instances we have seen people, unable to find a parking place, who have tried to park between the islands with bushes distributed within the parking lot, as well as trying to park on the grassy areas and the gravelled pathway for the priests to walk across from the parking lot to their house. Worse yet, we have seen vehicles going out of the parking lot through the single vehicle exit on the east side of the Church and then coming back into the Chapel's exit-only drive way. Normally, these vehicles can be seen parking backwards into the available parking places on the west side of the Chapel. In order to not create a problem after Mass, these people leave early, before the final blessing, and drive out before anybody else. 9. Our next project is the Annual Easter Sunday Egg Hunt for youngsters (pre-kinder through 10 years old. Each Knight has been requested to bring 2 dozen plastic eggs (some decorated) with candy inside to the Church's office during Holy Week (Monday through Friday) and to the Conference room in O'hara Hall until 1:00 PM on Easter Sunday. Prizes will be given to the children for different winning categories. I will report on this activity on my next report to the Pastoral Council. Respectfully, Manny Venegas Grand Knight Council #6727 |

February 9, 2008 President, Pastoral Council St. Columba Parish Dear Brother Bob, 1. We have not received (although one of our members has repeatedly asked for) the expected donation ($150.00) for the Persons with Intellectual Disabilities Drive from the Sony Corporation to whom we delivered 3 Tootsie Roll boxes back in September 2007. During the Council meeting, on Monday, February 4th, it was decided to wait no longer for that check and to complete the State Council form and mail it with the total amount donated to date, which was more than $13,000 (a new Council record). If we receive the Sony check sometime in the future, we will add it to the amount that we collect during our next drive scheduled for the October timeframe. As soon as we receive the check back from the State Council, we will present that check and the $1,000.00 check from Wal-Mart to the Vaughn-Blumberg Center for the Mentally Retarded. The Dothan Eagle newspaper and Wal-Mart representatives will be contacted and photos with captions will be sent to the Catholic Week newspaper. 2. Also, the Council voted to donate the left over boxes of Tootsie Rolls in the K of C room closet to Archbishop Lipscomb to give away during his "Blessing of the Fleet" at Bayou La Batre, as we have done in past years. On Sunday, February 10th, when the Archbishop came to St. Columba for the Rite of Election, I spoke with him during the reception and he thank me and my brother Knights for the Tootsie Rolls donation and then told me to give the Tootsie Roll boxes to Deacon Ernest. I did so. 3. In the afternoon of the 19th of January, we held our Annual Local Council Basketball Free-Throw contest in the gym of the Boucher Activities Center (BAC) building. Twenty-one boys and girls, ages 10 - 14, competed in their own age level and sex category, and we gave them certificates of competition. In addition, we gave the winners special certificates signed by the Supreme Knight and myself. Furthermore, we had a pizza and soft drinks party for all the contestants and their parents. Eight winners (4 boys and 4 girls) became eligible to participate in the District level competition which was held, for the first time in Dothan, this afternoon, in the BAC building. All of our kids won their respective District level competition and received Olympic size blue-ribonned medallions presented by our District Deputy, who resides and belongs to Council #11480 in Enterprise. After the competition, all the contestants were treated to a cookies & soft drinks party in the lower meeting room of the BAC building. The State level competition is scheduled to be held in the gym of Catholic High School in Montgomery, AL, on Saturday, March 15th, at 1:00 PM where they will receive a K of C Free-Throw competition "T"-shirt at the registration table. Winners, as well as first and second runner-ups, will receive trophies at the conclusion of the State competition. International champions will be determined on the basis of the best scores from the State competitions submitted in each age & sex categories. 4. The Council held an Initiation (First) Degree on Sunday, the 27th of January at 2:00 PM, for 3 new members in honor of His Holiness, Pope Benedict XVI. In addition, we accepted the re-application for membership from a previous member of the Marianna, FL, Council #7380. 5. During our Council meeting, earlier this week, in accordance with our Pastor's request, I solicited comments from the members regarding the new Church building. I was told by several members that the sound system echoes is probably the worst distraction during the Masses. Other problems, but of lesser importance, reported by the K of C members were as follows: a. Station of the Cross Number 12 has a very noticeable crack. Should be glued, painted to cover the crack or replaced. Other stations have smaller but noticeable cracks. b. There is no walkway to permit parishioners to go from the parking places on the west side of the Chapel to the front entrance of the Church without getting their feet wet or shoes muddy during inclement weather, having to walk through the inside of the Chapel (if the doors are unlocked), or having to walk around the back side of the Chapel. Another inconvenient way would be to enter the Church through a side door which may not be unlocked. c. A large statue in front of the Church cannot be seen at night, unless you are practically in front of it. 6. I received a letter from the Supreme Knight, Carl Anderson, asking among other things, to get permission from our Pastor to distribute, after the masses, cards with a photograph of Pope Benedict and a special prayer on the back of the card for his protection during his upcoming Apostolic visit to the USA, April 16-20th. We are also asked to visit www.kofc.org and add our names to the Spiritual E-Bouquet of prayers for the papal visit. I received approval from Fr. Gallagher to hand-out the cards after Masses during a particular weekend and to put an announcement in the Church bulletin to summarize what's on the letter which explains the reason for the card. 7. Also, during our Council meeting in February, we voted to send two delegates (yourself and myself) to the State Convention in Birmingham, April 25-27th. Brothers Bill Clements and Don Walker were voted as the alternates to attend in case you or I cannot attend. The Convention honoree will be Father Leo Blanchet, current State Chaplain of the Knights of Columbus. He underwent a back operation last month and is recuperating. One of our members brought a "get-well-soon" greeting card to the meeting and many of the attendees wrote encouraging notes on the card, and all of us signed it. I mailed it right after the meeting. 8. On Friday, February 22nd, we plan to hold a Fish-Fry, from 5:00 to 7:30 PM, on Friday, the 22nd, in O'Hara Hall. A committee was formed to take care of all the planning and execution of the project. The proceeds from this project will be used to support charitable activities of the Council, such as our pledge to Catholic Charities, our Seminarian, etc..... 9. On Saturday, February 23rd, I plan to accompany three of our Council members who intend to receive the honors of the Fourth Degree of our Order at Our Lady of the Valley Catholic Church in Pelham (just south of Birmingham). After the ceremony, we will attend Mass followed by a banquet with our families, later that evening. 10. Our Council approved the Activities Committee's proposed Schedule of Events for the rest of the calendar year and I provided a copy to Mrs. Renee Mandella, yesterday. It will be kept up-to-date and revised as necessary. Revisions will be given to Mrs. Mandella, and the Church bulletins will be used to notify all parishioners of any changes to the schedule. Respectfully, Manny Venegas Grand Knight Council #6727 |

11, 2008 President, Pastoral Council St. Columba Parish Dear Brother Bob, 1. We have not received the expected donation ($150.00) for the Persons with Intellectual Disabilities Drive from the Sony Corporation to whom we delivered 3 Tootsie Roll boxes back in September. Therefore, we still do not have the complete total of funds received from the 30th annual financial drive to provide monetary help to the Vaughn-Blumberg Center for the Mentally Retarded. Also, we are holding 3 boxes (900 tootsies) in the K of C room to donate them to Archbishop Lipscomb to give away during his "Blessing of the Fleet" at Bayou La Batre, as we have done in the past. Finally, the $1,000.00 check direct donation from Wal-Mart to the Dothan ARC, on behalf of the Knights of Columbus, was received yesterday. We'll arrange for publicity photos as soon as we get the check from Sony. 2. An icon of Our Lady of Charity, patroness of Cuba, began circulating within the northern part of the State of Alabama in late October; however, a schedule for the southern part of Alabama is yet to be provided to our District Deputy. As soon as it is developed, he will pass it on to each of the council Grand Knights in his District. The icon circulation in Alabama is supposed to end by September 2008. 3. During November, the Council's main interests and efforts were directed to the numerous preparations for the Annual Thanksgiving Baskets for the Needy project. After each Mass on the weekend before Thanksgiving Day, St. Columba parishioners donated $1,706.63 plus several bags of non-perishable items to our Council members who stood outside the external doors of the old Church (now called the Chapel) even as we experienced bad weather. On Tuesday, November 20th, we were able to provide 45 turkeys in addition to 40 food baskets (perishables and non-perishables) to needy families in our community, as selected by Catholic Social Services, here in Dothan. There was a surplus of funds ($575.49) which the Council voted to give to Catholic Social Services. I delivered the check on December 5th to Ms. Vickie Alleman. 4. On the 3rd of December, on behalf of the Council, I bought and delivered a meat and cheese tray plus bread, rolls, etc...., to the Walter Schlueter family, and extended our condolences and sympathy on their loss of Mary, wife of our Immediate Past Grand Knight. The Fourth Degree Assembly members also provided food from Kentucky Fried Chicken and voted to send 5 Mass cards to the family. 5. Also in December, the Council and the Assembly gave financial support to Peter Tereszkiewicz with obtaing his Eagle Scout Badge by creating a pathway between the St. Columba priests' home and the parking lot to the new Church Building. The project was completed by noon on Saturday, 8th of December, a few days before the dedication of the new Church building by the Archbishop. One of our members took several photographs and video coverage. 6. On December 14th, members of our Fourth Degree Assembly, assisted by members of the Fourth Degree Assembly of Daleville/Enterprise provided an Honor Guard for Archbishop Lipscomb during his special Mass dedication of the new St. Columba Church building. On Sunday, December 16th, the two Assemblies again provided an Honor Guard for the Archbishop who presided during the Mass of Our Lady of Guadalupe at St. Columba Church. 7. Also, on the 22nd of December, we held the Annual K of C Family pot-luck Christmas party after the 5:30 PM Mass, in O'Hara Hall. Seventy-six adults and 24 children participated in the party. One of our members designed, constructed, used and donated a "look-like real" fireplace, in addition to dressing up as Santa Claus to give candy to the children. The Council paid for most of the food and drinks while the members brought their favorite dishes (pot-luck supper). 8. During our first meeting of this calendar year, the Council voted to send you and your family a Mass card as an expression of sympathy of your brother Knights for the loss of your sister, Jo Ann, in Corpus Christi, TX. 9. This month, our Council members were invited to the Elks "Hoop-Shoot" in the gym of Northview High School, on Sunday, the 13th at 2:00 PM, to distribute our "flyers" and recruit contestants for our "Free-Throw" contest. In addition, designated Council members have been visiting the local schools, talking and giving copies of our posters and "flyers" to their basketball coaches to recruit as many contestants as possible. We will hold our local basketball Free-Throw contest in the Boucher Activities Center (BAC) building on Saturday, the 19th, at 2:00 PM, with registration beginning at 1:00 PM. The contestants must be 10 to 14 year-old boys and girls, as of the 1st of this month. At the conclusion of the contest, I will give certificates to all contestants and the Council will pay for a pizza and soft drinks party for all participants. The winners will be eligible to advance and participate in the District level competition which will be held on Saturday, February 16th, also in the BAC building. District level winners will receive Olympic size red/white/blue ribonned medalions. The State level competition is scheduled to be held in the gym of Catholic High School, on Saturday, March 15th, where trophies will be given by the Alabama State Deputy to the winners in each category. 10. The Council is planning to hold an Initiation (First) Degree on Sunday, the 27th of January at 2:00 PM, with preparations beginning at 1:00 PM in O'Hara Hall. 11. In February, in addition to hosting the District level Free-Throw contest, we plan to have a fund-raiser Fish-Fry on the evening of Friday, the 22nd. 12. We have been notified by Mrs. Pat Hawkey, Director of the Meals on Wheels program at Wesley Manor, which we had supported every February for several years, has been taken over by 7 churches in Dothan and our services are no longer needed. Respectfully, Manny Venegas Grand Knight Council #6727 |

President,
Pastoral CouncilSt. Columba Parish Dear Brother Bob, 1. As of today, we have not received the donation for the Persons with Intellectual Disabilities Drive from the Sony Corporation to whom we delivered 3 Tootsie Roll boxes back in September. One of our members is supposed to check on this situation. We also are holding 4 boxes in the K of C room for the Wachovia Bank who, in the past, have donated some amounts. We need to check into this, also. In addition, another box remains in the K of C room to be sold to whomever wants to buy it. Finally, the direct donation from Walmart to the Dothan ARC, on behalf of the Knights of Columbus, has not been acknowledged; therefore, we do not have the complete total of funds received from the 30th annual financial drive to provide monetary help to the Vaughn-Blumberg Center for the Mentally Retarded. 2. After the 5:30 PM Mass, on Saturday the 20th of October, we held our "Pot-Luck" which was attended by K of C Family members as well as candidates and their families. 3. An icon of Our Lady of Charity, patroness of Cuba, began circulating within the State of Alabama in late October; however, a schedule is yet to be provided to our District Deputy as soon as it is developed. Then, he will pass it on to each of the council Grand Knights in his District. The icon circulation is supposed to end by September 2008. 4. A First Degree Exemplification was held on Monday, October 29th, at 6:30 PM, in the K of C room in O'Hara Hall. We initiated 4 new members, including Joe Sette, Social Committee Chairman for the Pastoral Council, and Bonnie's husband, Eugene Lohmeyer. 5. During our last Fourth Degree Assembly members' meeting on Monday, October 15th, we discussed the possibility of helping financially Peter Tereszkiewicz with obtaining his Eagle Scout Badge in creating a pathway between the St. Columba priest's home and the parking lot to the new Church Building. Because there were some unanswered questions regarding the cost of the gravel, it was decided to table the decision until the Council meeting on the 5th of November to present the facts known and get support from the Council members, as well, so it would truly be a full K of C (Council and Assembly) project instead of just a Fourth Degree effort. However, the subject project was not discussed during the Council meeting because, in a private conversation with me, Fr. Irwin stated that he had instructed Peter to get back in touch with Mr. Dominic Curran who had stated that he would provide the gravel at no cost. If so, it would reduce the cost to the Council and the Assembly for supporting Peter's project. This situation has yet to be resolved so that the Council and the Assembly can vote on how much money will be allocated to the project by each group. I talked with Peter after the 5:30 PM Mass on the 17th of November and he told me that he intended to contact Mr. Curran by Monday evening, on the 19th and then call me with the results of that conversation. The next Council meeting is scheduled for Monday, on the 3rd of December, at 7:00 PM. Therefore, we still have a few days to get this item resolved before Peter plans to accomplish the project which he wants to do right after the new Church building is dedicated by Archbishop Lipscomb. 6. Although other activities were under consideration during the reporting period, the Council's main interests and efforts in November have been directed to the numerous preparations for the Annual Thanksgiving Baskets for the Needy project. After several considerations concerning the costs of food, it was decided to obtain the turkey meat (no hams) from the Food Bank and the rest of the food (perishables and non-perishables) from South Wal-Mart. The baskets (they are really boxes and plastic bags) will be ready for pickup or delivery to Catholic Social Services on Tuesday, November 20th, from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM. 7. The next project we are working on is the Annual K of C Family Christmas party tentatively scheduled for Saturday, December 22nd, after the 5:30 PM Mass, in the O'Hara Hall. Details and final preparations for the party will be discussed during a Council Social Committee meeting scheduled for Monday, November 26th, at 6:30 PM, in the K of C room of the RE building. 8. With the help of the Church Website Administrator, Ms. Bonnie Lohmeyer, the local K of C Council and Assembly have continued to publicize and provide it's past, present and planned future activities to those interested in these matters. Additional information has been published on the Church Weekend bulletins, as appropriate. Respectfully, Manny Venegas Grand Knight Council #6727

October 12, 2007 St. Columba Parish Dear Brother Bob, 1. On Thursday the 13th of September, the truck with the tootsie rolls shipment arrived at the St. Columba Religious Education Building (O'Hara Hall). A number of Knights were on-hand to receive the shipment and move the 100 tootsie roll boxes, as well as other boxes with cans, aprons and hats, to the K of C room where they were stacked against a wall for later use. After receiving approval from our pastor, one of our members spoke at the end of all masses (including the Hispanic Mass) during the weekend of September 22nd-23rd, requesting volunteers' help from St. Columba parishioners. We were successful in obtaining several volunteers who helped us "man" the stations in two-hour shifts during two consecutive weekends at the two Wal-Marts in Dothan. Then, on the following Tuesday (at the Dothan Commissioners' Council meeting), we received the official proclamation signed by the Mayor, Pat Thomas. After thanking the mayor and the commissioners, we proceeded to take up a collection from all attendees which netted $72.00. The drive was held on 4 days (two Fridays and two Saturdays: September 28-29, and October 5-6) and although at the time of this report submission we do not have the complete total of funds received from the 30th annual financial drive to provide monetary help to the Vaughn-Blumberg Center for the Mentally Retarded, because we have not received all of the bank checks and contributions from the various commercial establishments that normally contribute different amounts for this worthy cause, we estimate it will be approximately $10,000. 2. We held a social gathering immediately after the Fourth Degree business meeting which had been rescheduled to begin at 6:30 PM, on Monday, September 17th in the BAC building. For the social gathering, all attendees were asked to bring chips, dips and drinks to share with each other. In addition, the Faithful Navigator of the Daleville Assembly, Brother Tom Borneman, addressed those attending our Fourth Degree meeting about joining the Daleville Assembly members on the possibility of participating in the National Peanut Festival Parade (NPFP). We brought up several questions regarding safety and a committee to study the whole project was formed, but it appeared that there was a lot of work to be done and prepare a trailer for Knights and their family members to ride on it, and time was too short to make it happen this year. Brother Borneman came back once again to address our Council members during our October meeting and it was resolved that it was too late to support him for this year's NPFP. However, our Council could support him for next year's NPFP and possibly some other parades in the Wiregrass Area, later on, toward the end of this year, in Daleville, Enterprise and Ozark, if the trailer was fixed to meet all of the State of Alabama safety requirements. 3. We held a Corporate Communion in the Church during the 5:30 PM Mass on Saturday, September 22nd, where K of C members and their families sat and prayed together in the reserved pews on the right side of the Church. After Mass, some of us and our families gathered, had fellowship, and ate supper at the Atlanta Bread Company Restaurant. 4. During the Council meeting (postponed one day to Tuesday, the 2nd of October, due to a conflict with a Respect for Life Rosary on the first Monday of October), it was decided to hold a "Pot-Luck" supper after the 5:30 PM Mass on Saturday, October 20th. All K of C members and their families, as well as K of C candidates and their families, are invited to participate by bringing a dish of their own choice. Dress code will be casual. 5. An icon of Our Lady of Charity, patroness of Cuba, is supposed to begin circulating in the State of Alabama in late October; however, a schedule is to be provided to our District Deputy as soon as it is developed. Then, he will pass it on to each of the council Grand Knights in his District. The circulation is supposed to end by September 2008. 6. A First Degree Exemplification is planned for Monday, October 29th, at 6:30 PM, in the K of C room in O'Hara Hall. The First Degree Team members will have their practice on the previous Monday, October 22nd, also at 6:30 PM in O'Hara Hall. 7. The next Fourth Degree Assembly members' meeting is scheduled for October 15th at 7:00 PM and the next Council meeting is scheduled for Monday, November 5th, also at 7:00 PM 8. Even though our Council was mainly occupied with the drive to collect funds for the Persons with Intellectual Disabilities on Saturday, October 6th, we were represented at the Regional meeting in Montgomery on that same day. Also, we received an email from the State Deputy requesting that each District Deputy support the State Convention Program by raising and donating approximately $500.00 (or approximately $170.00 per local council) for advertisements in the Convention Program for the success of the State Convention. This amount converts to a State-wide total of $8,000.00 which will be used in part to protect the $5,000.00 checks given to each Bishop in Alabama at the State Convention Banquet, in April of each year. 9. The next State Council meeting is scheduled for early January 2008, probably in Montgomery. 10. Respectfully, Manny Venegas Grand Knight Council #6727 |
